We will start from Holy Trinity Cathedral, the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church and tallest church building in the Caucasus. Then we will move to the Metekhi Plateau, at the monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali, learn the legend about the foundation of the city and enjoy the impressive views of Old Tbilisi. We will continue our route by walking, it will allow us to experience the unique atmosphere of the city, see the statue of Tamada (Georgian toastmaster), the first public transport of Tbilisi, old trade-industrial streets, cross the Bridge of Peace and reach Narikala fortress by cable car. From the citadel we will go down by hiking trail, see the 19th century Tbilisi mosque and the waterfall of Leghvtakhevi. The excursion ends at the famous sulphur baths, which have great historical and social significance in the city life.
Day 3 - Gremi - Nekresi - Kvareli
This tour to Kakheti, which is one of the most beautiful region of Georgia in its eastern part, allows us to enjoy a variety of nature, traditional cuisine and cultural heritage sites, but the most impressive thing this area can introduce to you is a local winemaking method, continuing tradition dating back to 8000 years. The archaeological findings confirm that in VI millennium BC, the first wine in the world was made on territory of present day Georgia. That’s the reason why UNESCO has officially entitled this country as the Cradle of Wine. We will visit Gremi, a magnificent medieval city which was the capital of Kakheti region before the invasion of Shah Abbas of Persia. Gremi was consisted of a church complex, a royal residence and shopping districts and it is a masterpiece of late medieval architecture. Nekresi - historical and archaeological monument, which was founded as city on the eve of the II-I centuries BC. Now the complex combines several monuments of Georgian architecture, the oldest of which is the 4th century basilica. In the functioning monastery are saved beautiful medieval frescoes. Next destination is Ilia Lake in Kvareli, named after Prince Ilia Chavchavadze who was Georgian humanist writer, poet, and political figure. Lake is located in the unique micro zone of famous Kindzmarauli (naturally semi-sweet red wine made of Saperavi grapes), and surrounded by hilly forests from one side and tourist infrastructure from another. Finally, we will have a wine tasting in one of Georgia’s most impressive wine cellars, called the “Tunnel,” why? This is a real tunnel carved into the mountains of the Caucasus.
• Return to Tbilisi
Day 4 - Rabati - Likani - Borjomi
First spot we will see is — Rabati Castle, located in Akhaltsikhe (which means New Castle), in capital of Samtskhe–Javakheti region in southern Georgia. Important caravan routes went through Akhaltsikhe to different parts of Georgia and present day Turkey, what made this city an object of enemy invasions since its foundation in 9th century. For today, after restoration, it is Georgia's biggest and the most impressive fortified complex. Next stop is Likani, townlet located at the west end of the town of Borjomi, where we will be able to see gorgeous Romanov Palace, which was built in 19th century and served as a summer residence of the Russian emperor Alexander II. The palace complex consists of several buildings, main mansion is built in Moorish style and has different shapes from all sides, as well as each hall of the mansion is decorated in different styles. In Soviet period this palace was often used as holiday place by Soviet leaders (including Joseph Stalin). Final destination is Borjomi, the beautiful resort town, famous for its mineral waters with healing qualities. So, we can have a free tasting of widely known mineral waters at the site of its origin, which is Georgia's #1 export product and #1 friend of Georgians on a hangover.
