Mtskheta-Mtianeti is the one of the biggest regions of Georgia. It occupies 10 % of its territory. Why to come here? For the history. There is the former capital here which is Mtskheta. In the 6 century the king Vahtang Gorgasalia moved the capital to Tbilisi and Mtskheta lost its greatness. Now it’s  difficult  to imagine that this small picturesque town once was the capital . But it still has its special charm and the photos shot here would undoubtedly evoke an admiration. There is Svetitskhoveli Cathedral of 11 century in the middle of the town. It is famous for construction around a stake which myrrh drips from. The cathedral is active. The church weddings are held here. If you get here on Saturday or Sunday you may be able to present at one of them. Also it enters into the list of international legacy of UNESCO. Apart from Svetitskhoveli this list includes following places:
1)Female Samtavro Monastery which stands in suburbs of Mtskheta. Saint Nino had been living here for three years.
2)Dzhvari Monastery of 7 century which stands on the hill . From here a wonderful view greets you- two rivers Aragvi and Kura combine their waters. One of these rivers has white-colored water, the color of other one is black . That’s why it’s so beautiful.
There’s also one more monastery complex in Mtsheta suburbs , Shio-Mgvime. It is in a narrow canyon. One part of its rooms is carved in a rock. It is an active male monastery which is built according to Georgian medieval architecture.

Two other places of interest at once: Ananuri fortress and Zhinvali reservoir. To get here is almost as if you get in medieval Georgia. The picturesque lake, the medieval castle and the church. It seems like just close your eyes and you’ll hear the horses’ sniff and the warriors’ talking .
The reservoir hides the ancient town Zhinvali and an old area of Georgian Military Highway under its waters.
Next must visit place is Kazbegi village ( since 2007 it’s been called Stepantsminda ) and which is most important the church Gergeti. It is in the high mountains. From here the amazing panorama of the mountains and Kazbegi greet you. Once a year thousands believers come here on the holiday of Gergetoba.
Leaving Kazbegi you get to the magic Daryal canyon. Except for fantastic panoramas you can see here a Monastery of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. It’s been built recently but you cannot realize that because of its look.
Khevsureti has to be mentioned separately. It’s a mountainous region in Georgia which northern side borders on Chechnya and Ingushetia. There are Abudelauri lakes here, the dead town Mutso, the town-fortress Shatili and Kistani  village with no inhabitants as well.
It’s needed to be mentioned that there are a lot of old monasteries and temples in Mtskheta-Mtianeti. In some way this region was and is a center of religious life of Georgia.
The most modern thing here is ski mountaineering resort in Gudauri. There are 8 labeled tracks and ski lifts here. Nowadays it is the one of the best ski resorts in Caucasus. If you like  paraglider you definitely should come here.
In Mtsheta-Mtianeti the present and the past ,the nature and the buildings interlace so fancifully that it just fascinates. Please come here so that you may feel it yourselves!
